Fantastic Four.
On this day, exactly 4 years ago I welcomed my 2nd son. I remember I was not due to start my maternity leave but my body was tired. My boss, God bless him insisted that I should proceed on leave with immediate effect.
That fateful morning, I just had very spicy noodles and I was still on the same spot when I felt a sharp pain in my back. Considering this second pregnancy was associated with back aches from day one, i didn't think it was something serious.
Then it started feeling like there was a royal rumble going on in my stomach, my mum said oh maybe you put in too much spice in the noodles and went back to her room. I got up to start packing hospital bag because I am such a last minute human being. I am sure there are women who pack hospital bags from the day they find out they are expecting a baby. Anyways, was packing and singing and hoping the pain/discomfort will go away because baby is not due for another two weeks.
For every item I picked to put in the bag, there was a sharp kick coming with it. So I knew this little man was ready to come whether i was prepared or not. My husband was not in, there was no way I was going to be able to drive to the hospital by myself.
Started calling and for the life of me, his number did not go through for about 15 minutes when it finally did he was about 1.5 hours away from home. Just my luck.
Somehow he made it home in about 45 minutes , I want to believe he drove like a maniac to have been able to beat the traffic and the distance. We got to the hospital and that's where the real drama started. Because I had been told by my Ob/Gyn that I definitely will be having my baby through a cesarean section the hospital checked me in and called him to say his patient arrived before time.
I overheard him telling the doctor available not to allow me push or attempt to have the baby myself, he was away at the other branch to perform same procedure on another patient. By this time, I was already relieved and not feeling so much pain so I told the nurse not to mind him that I am capable of doing this push thing. After all, women do it all the time.
Fast forward to 2 hours later, the discomfort is back in full dose. I was already cranky then this nurse came in
Nurse: I need to check how ready you are.
Me: I am ready, don't touch me or I will bite you.
Nurse: please m'am this is important since you plan to have the baby yourself and not listen to your Ob/Gyn ( she had to rub it in that I was being silly I guess)
So, she checked and said good job you are now 3cm dilated. My eyes turned blue before turning red, you mean since I have been writhing in pain I just got to 3cm!!! Are you freaking kidding me ??
Then I asked how long does she think I have to get to the 10cm mark, with a very evil sneer on her face she said maybe another 6 hours. I died inside. You mean I am going to endure this for another 6 hours because I am trying to prove super woman? Not happening.
About an hour later, she checked again and it was 4cm, I screamed like a dog that stepped on hot coal come and get this baby out of me!!! Give me my phone and let me talk to the Doctor myself...I am sure that nurse went into their cubicle to laugh at me.
I was prepped for surgery, thank God for that thing called Epidural...there was no reason forming voltron when there is an easy way out . A few hours later this little man was taken out of me.
I am so thankful to God for this gift, my playful and caring little man. The one who is quick to say "I am going to look for another mummy and daddy" once he is being punished for being cheeky.
Happy birthday Sonshine.
